You should know by now Blueprint prides itself on being three things. Personal. Innovative. And FUN! While learning can be fun (our instructors prove that every day!), sometimes you just need to get out of the classroom and off campus. So, every Friday, we’ll be taking a moment to tell you about our awesome trips! Each week we’ll highlight a different campus and share the places students will be going on our Wednesday and Super Sunday Field Trips.
When you start your college experience, it’s important to get to know your campus! The best places to get food. Quiet spots to cram for that test. The easiest route from one class room to another. But there is so much more to discover just a short distance away! After all, knowing the best place to shake off the studying blues is just as important as getting that good grade.
4th Of July – The Great American Boom
Just one day after you arrive at UConn, it’ll be the 4th of July! You’ll celebrate the nation’s independence at The Great American Boom, held in New Britain, CT at Stanley Quarter Park. Dance to live music with Latanya Farrell & the Bookman Styles Band, get to know your new friends and finish the night watching a grand ol’ fireworks display.
1st Wednesday Roadtrip – Six Flags New England
You’ve started getting ready for college. You’ve learned something new. And you’ve experienced life on campus as a college student. What’s next? Destressing with thrill rides and roller coasters, of course! Just an hour bus ride from the UConn campus is 235 acres of fun and food at Six Flags New England.
Love roller coasters? Jump on the floorless BATMAN: The Dark Knight and travel at 55 miles per hour, feet dangling in the air. Or get inverted with Fireball, a looping coaster just a mere seven stories tall!
Prefer to keep your feet on the ground? Wander through Houdini’s haunted mansion, join a Daffy Duck dance party, or how about shaking hands with some super heroes? There’s something for everyone and you’ll have the whole day to explore, eat and hang out.
Super Sunday (Optional Trip) – Brownstone Park
Zip lines, rope swings and rock climbing, oh my! Connecticut is known as one of the prettiest states in the country and what better way to soak in all that nature than by hiking through it, climbing up it and swimming in it at Brownstone Park: Exploration and Discovery Park. Activities on land and water (don’t forget your water shoes!) will keep you busy all day.
Maybe you will even get up the courage to cliff jump! Is a leisurely kayaking excursion with your roomie more your speed? That’s okay, too! When you work up an appetite, snack on hot dogs, cheese burgers and fries at the park’s Food Shack and for dinner it’s finger-lickin chicken at Wings Over.
2nd Wednesday Roadtrip – New Haven, CT
Who hasn’t heard about the prestigious university of Yale? After this roadtrip you can tell people you’ve been there! The Ivy League school is known not only for its infamous political alumni but also for some of the most well-known actors and filmmakers.
After the hour long campus tour, and lunch at Chipotle, you’ll peruse the great exhibit halls of Yale’s Peabody Museum of Natural History. Learn about the museums 150-year legacy in the Treasures of the Peabody: 150 Yeas of Exploration & Discovery temporary exhibit. See the student-curated Heritage at Risk: Destruction in Syria. Spend some time in the Discovery room – real life leaf-cutter ant colony, live animals, giant silk moth caterpillars – where “hands on” is the name of the game! Don’t forget the Great Hall of Dinosaurs housing Rudolph Zallinger’s famous mural The Age of Reptiles.
Last, but definitely not least, you’ll be developing leadership and team work skills in the MOST excellent way at Empower Leadership Sports & Adventure Center. What’s better than learning by racing down zip lines (40 to 75 feet up) and taking on obstacle courses together? Through small team challenges and group exercises, you will learn to trust your teammates and yourself!
